Homeschooling with Toddlers:

Homeschooling with toddlers can feel like a whirlwind of interruptions and distractions. Fear not! In this article, we will share one of the best tips we’ve gathered from homeschooling our 8 kids. One key strategy for us was coordinating and taking advantage of nap times. Ready go.

The Challenges of Homeschooling with Toddlers

The struggle of feeling like your attention is being pulled in multiple directions is a common challenge for homeschooling parents with toddlers. Maintaining the focus to create a conducive learning environment amidst the consistent needs of your little ones isn’t easy. However, finding a routine that works for both parents and children can help create structure and stability for your homeschool journey.

Coordinating Nap Times

If you aren’t already, coordinating nap times can be a game-changer when it comes to managing your time effectively. By syncing up your toddlers’ nap times, you can carve out uninterrupted blocks of time for homeschooling activities or personal tasks. To successfully transition all your toddlers to nap at the same time, consider following these steps over a 3-5 day period:

  1. Gradually shift nap times: Start by adjusting each child’s nap time by 15-30 minutes each day until they align. This gradual approach can help minimize disruptions and ease the transition for everyone involved.
  1. Create a calm environment: Establish a nap-time routine that signals to your toddlers that it’s time to rest. For us it is often a brief living room pick up and hands and face washing. Some might dim the lights, play soft music, or read a story to help set the stage for a peaceful nap.
  1. Be patient and flexible: Remember that each child may respond differently. It may take time for all of them to adapt to the new nap schedule. Be patient and adjust as needed to find what works best for your family.

Doing Parent-Dependent Subjects During Nap Time

It might be tempting to try to do your most involved subjects first thing in the morning or to procrastinate as long as possible because they tend to be the most difficult. However, nap time provides an ideal opportunity to engage in parent-dependent subjects that require more of your attention. It can offer either one-on-one time with your older children that can be enriching and productive, or the quiet they need to focus deeply. Consider working on struggle activities during this time: activities such as reading aloud, math lessons, or science experiments. Some of the things we’ve benefited most from is the quality one-on-one time; you can focus almost entirely on one child at a time, providing individualized attention that promotes deeper learning. Our kids feel fewer distractions too: without the pressing needs of your toddlers, nap time allows for a quieter and more focused learning environment.

To make the most of this time, prepare materials in advance: Organize and gather the necessary resources for your parent-dependent subjects ahead of time. Print out the math sheets, locate the books etc. This way, you can maximize the time available for meaningful engagement.

Quick science lesson, toddlers’ (under 5 yrs.) sleep cycles are a bit shorter than adults, they last about 60 to 90 minutes. Shooting for 1-2 sleep cycles during nap time is very healthy for them. We shoot for an hour and a half of quiet time. Realistically, nap time isn’t forever so set achievable objectives for each session. This will help ensure a sense of accomplishment and prevent frustration for both you and your children.

Conclusion

Homeschooling with toddlers may present unique challenges, but with some thoughtful strategies in place, it can become a rewarding and manageable journey. Coordinating nap times can provide great periods of uninterrupted focus for a better learning environment. Remember to find a routine that works for your family and incorporate parent-dependent subjects during nap time. Before you go, take a moment to think about how you can implement just one improving step into your routine. Thanks for checking us out, we really do believe you’ve got this!
